Prison Break actress Sarah Wayne Callies has spoken out about the ‘rampant misogyny’ she experienced on the set of the hit TV series, including an incident where a male co-star spat in her face.
From 2005 – 2009, Callies played Dr Sara Tancredi in the show which starred Dominic Purcell as Lincoln Burrows, who has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, with his younger brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) devising a plan to help his brother escape from prison and clear his name.
Callies’s character was killed off in Season 3, by which point the show had fallen off a cliff anyway, but she returned when the show was rebooted in 2017.
Callies now hosts the Prison Breaking rewatch podcast with former co-star Paul Adelstein, who portrayed Agent Paul Kellerman. During a recent episode, she spoke about how she initially found it very difficult to rewatch the show:
‘I don’t recognise that girl. She’s so young, she’s so new in the business… it’s like watching another person. I couldn’t get beyond the parts that were toxic and painful.’
She explained how the podcast had provided ‘the sort of medicine to go back’ and rewatch the show despite ‘the rampant misogyny, despite all of the challenges, despite being on a show like that, the only woman around’.
‘I’ve had an actor spit in my face. And I was like ‘Holy s***!’ We will get there on the podcast; we will talk about it someday.’
‘There were things, like, I would go home some nights and have to spend an hour talking my husband out of going to hospitalise somebody.’
Previously, Sarah Wayne Callies had gone into detail over a separate incident, which involved her male co-stars watching the infamous ‘2 Girls 1 Cup’ sex tape on set. Apparently the men were all sitting around and watching it and one of them said “hey Callies, this looks like you.” They then began joking that she was one of the girls in the video, and she was very disappointed that one of her co-stars, who she considered herself to be very close with, didn’t stick up for her as she was clearly upset about it:
Aside from that, it doesn’t sound like Sarah Wayne Callies is ready to go into too much detail about the ‘rampant misogyny’ on set, but suggests she will do at a future date. Naturally speculation is rife over the identity of the male co-star who spat in her face, with the obvious guess being Robert Knepper AKA T-Bag, who is apparently a bit of a pervert in real life too and has several accusations of sexual misconduct from actresses he was worked with.
The next popular guess is Dominic Purcell AKA Lincoln Burrows, who is apparently is also a bit of a c0ck in real life. But then I guess you would be pretty full of yourself if you were shagging both Miley Cyrus’s mum and her sister.
Following her time on Prison Break, Callies went on to star as Lori Grimes on The Walking Dead, where it appears she had a better experience.
Fair play to her for coming out about all this nearly 20 years later. Better late than never I suppose.
