Everyone knows that in 2016 it’s never been easier to offend people on the internet. Anyone who’s seen the reaction to this GAP advert that featured a white girl that was taller than a black girl can attest to that.

This one kind of flew under the radar a little bit, but it turns out cereal brand Cheerios had an absolute nightmare backlash after they tweeted out an RIP tribute to Prince last week.
What exactly was so wrong with their tribute?
See if you can spot what got people so mad… (Tweet has since been deleted, obviously)
Nothing?
Here’s what people were so pissed about = they dotted the “i” with a cheerio.

. @cheerios still no apology for your #Prince tweet? You deleted it and hoped people would forget?! Show humanity and apologise.

@cheerios who made vulgar PR of the cheerio placement with respect to passing if Prince ? Idiot move

Sneaky self promotion? I guess. But isn’t that the whole point of Twitter? It’s not really any different than Niagara Falls turning purple or celebritiestTweeting out photos of themselves with Prince with an #RIP hashtag. Obviously Cheerios is a cereal so they had to come with something different, so they dotted the “i” with a cheerio. So what?
That’s the trouble with the internet though – people take things way too seriously. A bloody cereal can’t say RIP Prince without everyone losing their minds.
GAP can’t put out an advert without people saying it’s racist. Stephen Fry can’t crack an innocent joke without getting hounded so hard he decides to quit social media altogether.
Cheerios’s Prince tribute was no different to any other Prince tribute that was tweeted out. Everyone can miss Prince in their own way. It’s not like they’re going to sell more cereal because he died.
