A police officer over in Austin, Texas, is under fire after he was filmed ‘groping’/sliding his hands around a woman’s breasts as he searched her, all while she requested a female officer conduct the search.
In the 15 second clip, the officer runs his hands over the woman’s chest twice as the man filming yells at him:
Well that does seem a bit heavy handed although I’m not 100% sure on the correct police protocol for searching around a woman’s breasts. According to the Austin Police Department’s Policy Manual:
Officers needing to search a person of the opposite gender should do so in front of a Mobile Audio Video (MAV) recording system, if available; otherwise an officer of the same gender as the person should be requested.
The Austin Police Department has issued a statement on Twitter, naming the woman as Rosalinda Nuno Trevino. She had just been arrested for “multiple hazardous traffic violations [including] running a red light, failure to yield right-of-way to pedestrians, improper use of a horn and failure to maintain an assured clear distance”.
It also says that the officer advised Trevino that a female officer was not available, and conducted the search as per police guidelines, including screenshots of the specific clauses which make his actions permissible. So it looks like his tit-searching technique was all standard and above board.
Like I said though, I understand why anyone watching that clip would think there was something not quite right about his search. Especially as he then goes in for seconds as the woman is freaking out and the guy filming is shouting at him. People online are really pushing for a further investigation into the incident though, so we’ll see what happens.
