By now you’ve probably seen the footage of the police officer kicking and stamping a man in the head at Manchester Airport, but here’s the clip in case you missed it:

Extremely rare to see such ferocity from UK cops, especially well-trained armed cops, so what gives? Well apparently the police were called to an altercation between members of the public, during which a female police officer got punched in the face and suffered a broken nose, so I guess that’s where it turned personal for the officer who decided to kick one of the men in his head.
However, as satisfying as that might have felt, you can’t be doing that as a police officer, especially when the man is already subdued on the ground.
And so, Greater Manchester Police have today announced that the officer in question has been suspended:
‘Following a thorough review of further information that has become available in relation to an incident at Manchester Airport on Tuesday evening, Greater Manchester Police has suspended a police officer from all duties.
‘A referral has now been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for a full independent investigation.
‘We understand the deep concerns that have been widely raised with us, and will continue to meet and discuss these feelings with Greater Manchester residents and elected representatives, whilst this independent investigation takes place.’
Last night, demonstrators chanted ‘f*** the police’ as they massed outside the station where the victim and three other males were detained after their arrests at the airport. There were also chants of “Allahu Akbar” and suggestions that this may have been racially-motivated, which is of course the last thing GMP need to deal with.
Manchester Airport also put out a statement:
We are aware of an incident involving Greater Manchester Police officers that took place yesterday and, as a result, the force is investigating the matter. We will support the investigation in any way possible. https://t.co/QIXIjt2rbp
