Most of the ice used to create the sculptures is taken from the frozen surface of the nearby Songhua River.

To make the clearest most glass-like ice, some people use frozen deionised water. Apparently that guarantees a pure finish on the cut blocks.

So like I say, I’ll probably never make it all the way over there to look at those beasts, but it still looks pretty impressive from afar.
