I think everyone remembers that classic Manchester New Year’s Eve photograph by Joel Goodman from seven years ago, as it’s such a perfect composition that it almost resembles a classical painting.

This year, Joel decided to venture out once more into the wilds of Manchester for another NYE photoshoot. Sadly, I don’t think that his new effort is quite up to the standards of his previous viral masterpiece, but it does still showcase some of the elements synonymous with a massive Manchester night out.

The shot was taken outside Manahatta Bar on Deansgate in the city and features an ambulance, a woman holding her high heels in her hands whilst having an argument with her boyfriend, another woman comforting her sobbing friend up against a billboard proclaiming Happy New Year 2022 and a bunch of other people looking hectic and aggy ringing in 2023. Classic Manchester really.

Yeah, looking at it on its own the 2023 version isn’t exactly bad, but I think when it’s compared to the original then there’s only going to be one winner. Still, Goodman should still be happy with the shot as there’s a lot going on and it perfectly encapsulates the madness of New Year’s Eve in a big city.

Kinda surprised that he hasn’t tried to capture a similar image until now to be honest. Or maybe he has done it each New Year’s Eve for the past six years but this is the only one that’s even come close, proving what an anomaly the other one was in the first place. Iconic.
