Even before all the recent Hollywood allegations that began with the Harvey Weinstein scandals, everyone in Hollywood knew that Roman Polanski was – for all intents and purposes – a paedophile after he was found guilty of having sex with a 13 year old girl and forced to flee the country to avoid a jail sentence.

Polanski has always maintained that the girl wanted to have sex with him and he’s not a rapist in the traditional sense of the world as he was found guilty of statutory rape. Whilst many would ignore this fact because the guy was still having sex with 13 year old girls when he was 40 or something, Quentin Tarantino has bizarrely come to his defence in an old recently unearthed Howard Stern interview from 2003.

He didn’t rape a 13-year-old. It was statutory rape. That’s not quite the same thing, alright? He had sex with a minor. That’s not rape.
To me, when you use the word rape, you’re talking about violent, throwing them down, it’s one of the most violent crimes in the world. Throwing the word rape around is like throwing the word racist around. It doesn’t apply to everything people use it for.
He was guilty of having sex with a minor.
She wanted to have it. Dated the guy… we’re talking about America’s morals, we’re not talking about the morals in Europe and everything.
Look… she was down with it. And she’s talked about it!
Damn. I mean I guess Tarantino has a point there that statutory rape is very different to actual rape itself, but you’ve gotta say that it’s completely rank that Polanski even wanted to have sex with a 13 year old girl and actually went through with it.
And Tarantino did agree with that in the end, just that he didn’t actually ‘rape’ her and it was statutory rape, so I guess she’s not really defending Polanski’s actions just the exact definition of them. It’s a very controversial debate though so I think I’m just gonna stay out of it.
