Many prisoners were born there under North Korea’s “three generations of punishment”. This means anyone found guilty of committing a crime, however small, would be sent to the camp along with that person’s entire family. The subsequent two generations of family members would be born in the camp and must also live their entire lives and die there.
Shin is the only person known to have escaped that camp. Ever. An estimated 200,000 people are detained in these hell holes and people that live in North Korea are genuinely terrified of being shipped off there for no real reason, at any point. Once you’re in there you just stay there until you die. Torture and rape are standard.
Within the camps hunger is a way of life, an estimated 40% actually die of hunger, all there is to eat is measly portions of cornmeal and cabbage and most have to scavenge rats, frogs, snakes and cockroaches to survive. They work from 5:30am until midnight in all weathers without adequate clothing. Fingers are often lost to frost bite, and youngsters often die in accidents due to the dangerous nature of the work.
Anyone thought to be planning an escape is executed in full view of the camp inmates. Shin witnessed dozens of executions every year. At the schools kids are sometimes beaten to death for minor errors. Shin actually had the tip of a finger cut off for accidentally breaking a sewing machine and he witnessed a six year old girl being beaten to death for stealing five kernels of corn.
As a 13 year old he heard that his family was planning an escape, he was so brain washed as a boy that he told the guards of their plans so they executed his mother and brother in front of him after torturing him for four days to see if he knew anything else. This torture included receiving a meat hook to the groin to keep him still whilst they lit a fire under his back. It’s difficult to imagine how a human could do that to a child. Here’s an interview with Shin:

He eventually planned his escape with a friend, his friend however was electrocuted to death by the fences on the perimeter and Shin had to use his friend’s lifeless body as protection to clamber over it to safety. Now he lives in South Korea and speaks out to make these atrocities public. He’s a brave, brave man and his story should be heard by everyone. We forget how lucky we are. Look at this fat fuck and think about what he’s doing. Makes my blood boil…..
