A lead investigator used the following example when drawing parallels between North Korean death camps and Nazi concentration camps: “Testimony was given… in relation to the political prison camps of large numbers of people who were malnourished, who were effectively starved to death and then had to be disposed of in pots burned and then buried… it was the duty of other prisoners in the camps to dispose of them.”
The lucky few that have escaped North Korea have told their stories of deprivation and cruelty, especially within the concentration camps where as many as 200,000 people reside. “The gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world,” the report says.
Sick Chirpse previously covered the story of a Korean prisoner of war Shin Dong-hyuk who told his story. The levels of deprivation and desperation he experienced were endless. The UN commission of inquiry, headed by retired Australian judge Michael Kirby said that words were no longer enough and that action had to be taken.
