I think I first saw the trailer for ‘The Black Phone’ last Autumn and it looked pretty terrifying even back then, but now that it’s only a couple of months away from release this new trailer makes it look way, way worse.

‘The Black Phone’ revolves around Ethan Hawke’s freaky looking serial killer The Grabber who terrorises a small town in 1970s Colorado. He ends up kidnapping young Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) and imprisoning him in a basement/the world’s grimmest escape room.

Finney’s only chance of survival is a mysterious phone that allows him to communicate with The Grabber’s previous victims who then proceed give him a bunch of riddles to solve in order to break out. Sounds stressful.

Eek that looks kind of freaky doesn’t it, especially Ethan Hawke’s collection of creepy little masks. I think I would probably have preferred it if the supernatural element with the phone and the ghosts was taken out and and it was just a weirdo Ethan Hawke kidnapping some kid and the kid trying to escape, but maybe that says more about me than the movie.

Anyway. the film premiered at CinemaCon last night and the initial reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Critics have praised the acting, plot and jump scares so it should be one to check out at the cinema when it’s released in June. Looking forward to it.
