I remember seeing the original Purge movie with Ethan Hawke and thinking that it was a fairly entertaining and worth watching, but I never really thought that the powers that be would consider making a franchise out of it.

Clearly I was wrong though, because we’re now on our third Purge movie and it looks like they’re just getting better and better, despite the fact Ethan Hawke is no longer around to star in them. I suppose the concept – that all crime, including murder, is legal for a 12 hour window each year – leads itself to telling all kinds of different stories so I should have been a bit smarter about that after seeing the original.
The newest instalment is called ‘The Purge: Election Year’ and takes a political slant on the purge, where one upcoming female senator is campaigning to end it, but in an ironic twist her rivals decide to use the purge to take her out. Obviously she has to do whatever it takes to survive for 12 hours, and that’s when the fun begins:
Yeah, if you add clown/hockey masks to anyone they never fail to be scary. It might be a tried and tested formula, but it always pays off.
The movie looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun when it drops on independence day weekend – I also love how it’s tagline ‘make America great again’ is similar to Donald Trump’s election campaign. To be honest, the purge is the kind of policy you could actually see that guy implementing in order to get rid of immigrants or something.
For another great movie that’s coming out this year, check out the trailer for Lights Out.
