Two years after Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, never-before-seen footage from the set of ‘Rust’ has been released which shows Baldwin firing the prop gun just days before the tragic incident:
The 65-year-old has always insisted he didn’t pull the trigger and that the gun fired itself, which isn’t exactly how guns work, but regardless, all charges against him were dropped in April.
In one of the five clips, he can be seen lying on his back in the dirt holding the prop. He tells someone: ‘Go to the other side of the camera. I don’t want to shoot towards you.’ Which doesn’t sound like something you would need to say on a set where they’ve had adequate gun safety training. In Baldwin’s defence though, the clip does show that he at least personally understands the danger of firing a weapon with people in the vicinity.
Last month, it was reported prosecutors in New Mexico are looking to recharge Baldwin, so he’s not quite out the woods yet. After all, not only was he holding the weapon, he was also a producer on set, so I guess someone needs to be held responsible. What I still can’t wrap my head around is how a gun on a movie set would have real, live ammunition in it? It just makes no sense that something this tragically absurd could happen in the first place. RIP Halyna Hutchins and let’s hope her friends and family get some closure at the end of this.
