By now you’ve probably seen the viral video of the man in Nandos slapping a waitress across the face with his plate, with social media up in arms over the fact that the police failed to take the incident seriously.
Here’s the footage:
Hi @NandosUK the below incident happened in your Stratford outlet yesterday.
Can you confirm that the assault has been reported to the police and your member of staff has received the support she deserves? pic.twitter.com/LUBCmg6MzU— BLAIM GAME (@BLAIMGame) August 21, 2024
The young victim, Zahra, has now put out a statement revealing exactly what happened and explaining how the police dealt with (or failed to deal with) the situation, and it’s pretty shocking stuff:

Incredible. So not only did this man assault this girl while police officers were present in the restaurant, they also let the man go on his merry way after speaking to him. They didn’t even bother checking the CCTV, and when they did, gave her a bunch of reasons as to why she shouldn’t press charges. Even after she filed a complaint, they shrugged it off as a ‘mistake’ and basically told her to get over it and the case would be closed.
Now that the video has gone viral (months later, mind you), the Met have finally put out a statement apologising for their incompetence and re-opened the case:
We’re looking into why we didn’t respond promptly at the time of this incident in March and are sorry we didn’t provide a better service.
We haven’t made any arrests yet – if anyone can help us identify this man please call 101 ref CAD 1872/21 Aug or DM us.”

Unreal. How is any young woman supposed to feel safe when they can get walloped on the head with a plate in a packed Nandos with police officers present, and police act like they can’t be bothered to deal with it? Surely the officers who were there on the day need to be disciplined, but more importantly, the attacker should be behind bars.
Again, if it wasn’t for this footage going viral and the resulting outrage online, this man would have got away with it. In fact, he still may, given that the police failed to take his name and details and have no real clue where he is.
Here’s hoping for a satisfactory conclusion to this saga and that the Met learn to take incidents like this more seriously in future. Absolute sh*t-show!
