It’s been a while since I’ve been to Nando’s but I imagine that their vegetarian options were just spicy bean burgers or grilled halloumi wraps or whatever, so it’s a real game changer that they’ve today announced that they’re going to be offering some fake chicken on their menu.

The new item is called ‘The Great Imitator’ and has been designed to replicate the exact taste of Nando’s legendary Peri Peri chicken breast fillet. Instead of chicken though, ‘The Great Imitator’ is made entirely from pea protein and is served as four strips that are grilled to order and can be placed in a wrap, pitta or burger and of course you can also choose how hot and spicy you want it as well.
Here’s what Dawn Carr, the Director of Vegan Corporate Projects at PETA, had to say about it:
PETA is delighted to have played a part in Nando’s journey to putting this delicious plant-based chicken on the table. Nando’s can’t guarantee zero risk of cross-contamination, so it’s not calling it vegan, but as all the ingredients in the burger and pitta versions are completely animal-free – right down to the mayo – we say these are an excellent choice for vegans, vegetarians, meat-reducers, and chickens. Cluck yes!
Sounds like it’s actually going to be real good and whatever your thoughts on veganism/vegetarianism you have to admit that it’s great that companies like Nando’s are doing their best to provide more alternative options for those who choose to live their life that way. Be interested to try this and see what they come up with next as well. It’s out tomorrow (October 13th).
