An XL Bully owner has come to the defence of the breed after her own pet mauled her and her partner at their home in Newtownards, Northern Ireland, last month.
Ashton Gillespie, 27, says she feared for her life after her seven-year-old XL Bully, Tommy, attacked her and her boyfriend, Ryan Lewis, without warning at their home. She says that she owes her life to Ryan after he saved her from from the dog’s jaws despite having his own arm ‘ripped open’.
Police were called to the property where they promptly shot the XL Bully dead, and you’d think that after that, Ashton would never want to go near an XL Bully again.
Well, that’s where you’d be wrong, because Ashton has not only absolved her dead XL and its breed of any blame, but also claims she would be happy to get another XL Bully in the future. Is she feeling OK, or what?
Ashton, who is still recovering with a fractured hand and stitches in her leg, told The Belfast Telegraph:
“It’s not the breed. It’s also not down to ownership. That dog was treated like an absolute baby and had his own bedroom and everything he needed.
“He didn’t do it because he’s an XL bully, and I’m sick of people giving them a bad name. I thought he was going to kill me, but it’s not down to his breed. He just flipped.”
How does that make any sense? The XL Bully ‘just flipped’ even though he was loved and cared for?
To make matters worse, Ashton confirmed that her XL Bully had previously bitten a teenager, but claims that he was provoked:
“Unfortunately, I was in Turkey at the time, and there were clear rules set in place that were not followed. Friends of mine were staying with me, and there was an incident. A teenager was trying to separate my two dogs, who don’t get along. He was beating Tommy on the head, and the dog defended himself.
“His mother has confirmed this on Facebook. Tommy was then escorted out of my home to a vet by the PSNI. That resulted in me coming home to an £800 vet bill and boarding kennel fees. I’m fed up with people making up rumours about this and saying he attacked a child in the street because that’s not what happened.”
Ashton claims she’s found plenty of support from other XL Bully owners online, but has also had to contend with people taking the p1ss out of her (shocker):
“I’ve barely been able to sleep and haven’t eaten due to the stress. I’m physically sick of getting trolled online.
I back the breed 100 per cent and always will.”
Incredible. Funny how it’s always dogs like the XL Bully that flip, and never a Shetland Sheepdog or Golden Retriever. If those dogs were ever to flip, the damage would be a tiny nip on the hand and not a mauling to death. For some reason however, Ashton is adamant that the XL Bully is a safe and loving breed, even after being savaged by her own dog without provocation. It fractured her hand with its jaws ffs! Should she even be allowed to own another XL Bully, given this is her attitude about it all?
The mind boggles.
