True crime documentaries are a dime a dozen these days since ‘Making A Murderer’ broke the internet all those years ago, but it’s very rare that one comes along that captures the collective hearts and minds of the nation like ‘The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal’.

The three part series was released on Netflix last week and has steadily climbed to the top of the charts thanks to word of mouth, not least helped by the fact that the main subject of it Alex Murdaugh is currently on trial right now at this very moment, with the verdict supposedly delivered by the jury in the next few days. The trailer is actually a masterclass in storytelling on its own, so it’s probably better if you just watch that rather than have me spoil it with any details:
The Murdaughs were one of South Carolina’s most prominent families, but the death of teenager Mallory Beach in a drunken boating accident began the unraveling of their legacy.
When Paul Murdaugh – the alleged driver of the boat – and his mother Maggie are found brutally murdered, a century of corruption, power, and cover-ups in the Low Country is brought to light.
The three-part series will feature first-hand accounts from those on the boat that fateful night, many of whom have not spoken about the crash or double homicide of Maggie and Paul until now, including: Paul Murdaugh’s longtime girlfriend, Morgan Doughty; Mallory Beach’s childhood friends, Miley Altman and Connor Cook; Mallory’s boyfriend, Anthony Cook; and, several others.
Wow. I don’t say this about many true crime documentaries these days but that really has got me hooked and wanting to watch it immediately and find out everything about it before the jury reads out the verdict. Probably gonna immediately cancel my plans tonight to check it out. I love a Southern gothic tale like that.
For more of the same, check out this Netflix show about the mystery of a woman’s true identity. Another one I really enjoyed.
