The mother of a Just Stop Oil campaigner has complained that her daughter will miss her brother’s wedding after being jailed for blocking the M25 motorway. It’s annoying when you can’t get to where you want to go, isn’t it?

22-year-old Cressida Gethin was jailed for four years last week – which does seem extremely harsh, to be fair – after she and four other activists blocked the M25, causing mass disruptions by climbing onto gantries over the motorway for four successive days in November 2022.

Here’s Cressida on the left:

Speaking outside court after Cressida was jailed, her mum Cathy Nelson said her daughter had tried “polite routs to protest, persuade, and affect change… but saw that no one was paying attention.”

She says her daughter had “no option” but to take action, and that her jail term “means she will not be present at her brother’s wedding next summer.”

Cressida was sentenced alongside four other Just Stop Oil protesters; Roger Hallam, 58, Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, and Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35. Hallam, co-founder of Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion, got five years while the remaining four defendants were each handed four years.

These are thought to be the longest sentences ever given for a peaceful protest, and again, it does seem extremely harsh, but at the same time it’s also harsh blocking off the motorway for consecutive days and completely ruining the lives of people just trying to go about their days. Imagine how many people may have missed a wedding themselves because they were stuck on the M25 when Cressida and her mates decided to protest? Not just weddings, either; hospital appointments, job interviews, court hearings, etc.

Who knows, maybe the justice system will take pity on Cressida and let her out for the day of her brother’s wedding so she can attend with the rest of her family. Or maybe they can let her out on the day of, and the rest of us are allowed to stand in front of the car taking her there? Now that would be the ultimate troll job.
