Deliveroo, Uber Eats and all those companies are notorious for not paying their delivery drivers very much money and trying to avoid giving them any benefits or any kind of a fair employment package, so they’re probably really happy that 22-year-old mother Atlanta Martin is out there singing their praises.

Atlanta realised that she could make £1000 a week delivering food to people if she worked 11 hour shifts, so decided to quit her job as a flight dispatcher to pursue it full time. Last week, Atlanta and her 36 year old boyfriend Benjamin Hasker (somewhat of a problematic age gap there hey?) thought that it might be fun to see how much money they could make with a 24 hour non stop Deliveroo challenge.
The pair of them started off at 7am in their hometown of Worthing in Surrey, picking orders off Just Eat, UberEats, Beelivery, Deliveroo and Gophr, then when day turned into night they headed down to Brighton and operated solely off Uber Eats and Deliveroo. They managed to make £330.16, travelling 220 miles and making 77 deliveries.
Here’s what Atlanta had to say about her experience:
I’ve wanted to do this as a challenge for a while.
When I first looked into doing it, the only place where you could really do 24 hours of delivering was London, but as deliveries have become more available, you can now do it in Brighton.
I had Ben with me, so we motivated each other and took turns driving – I’m not a morning person so already struggled getting up for 7am and Ben drove a lot in the night.
I didn’t realise how much caffeine affected me but I was so tired in the night and then had a Diet Coke and suddenly had this burst of energy which was really helpful!
We kept going to a 24 hour McDonald’s for the toilet, and we had a Domino’s at about 11pm which was amazing.
We got a croissant from Budgens at 6am – that kept us going in the final stretch.
We wanted to see what it was like delivering at night and it was actually the busiest between about midnight and 5am, despite it being midweek.
Well it sounds like she had a good time but I really gotta question whether it was worth it? I’m not sure if this is still accurate given the recent increasing price of fuel in this country, but the internet says it’s about 25p a mile to drive a car, so I make that around £55 in petrol costs for the pair of them. Then it sounds like she bought a bunch of food and drink too, so let’s budget £30 for that, meaning that they’re only really making £245.16 then.
Split that between them and that’s £122.58 each which is just over £5 an hour. I get that it might have been a ‘fun challenge’ sure but I’m not sure if that kind of wage is sustainable in the future. Just saying if you delve a little deeper, it’s not all that. Maybe being a flight dispatcher was actually better?
For more of the same, check out when Deliveroo fired a driver for making fun of a woman ordering thrush cream. Fair enough I suppose.
