Total Recall (1990) Rated 18
Total Recall is another movie that you may not have caught as its hardly flying out of DVD shops under the rest of Arnie‘s giant back catalogue. Apologies though if you are one of the casualties with a
broken remote control and a freeview box that is stuck on ITV2 as chances are you will have seen this movie 600 times in the past week as it has resurfaced of late.
This cult Sci-Fi classic is centred around Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger) and is set sometime in the future. Quaid is a regular construction worker who longs for a trip to Mars but his wife (Sharon
Stone) isn’t hot on this, so he pops over to Rekall in order to have a holiday memory implanted in his head, as you do. Cue ultra massive head-fvck beginning as he jumps at the chance to pretend to be a
secret agent as part of the holiday. Machine blows up, malfunctions and then a whole is he/isn’t he parade begins where he is convinced that he is in fact a Special Agent Hauser – a man desperate to escape
to Mars.
The remake is neither in keeping with the original movie or the novel it was based on but instead pits Malcolm In The Middle’s dad, Bryan Craston, against poor man’s Alexander The Great Colin Farrell in a
battle between the nation states of Euromerica and New Shanghai. Although Farrell has got a few good films under his belt and Craston’s science teaching, drug dealing family man act in Breaking Bad is
fantastic I just cannot see this remake being anything but disappointing.
This classic was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who gave us such greats as Showgirls and Basic Instinct so of course it is worth watching just for the partial nudity. Although, from an age of two girls one cup I
suppose the thought of a women with three boobs might not shock and awe as it once did but it must still be worth a look…if not I’m sure the giant head explosion scene will sway you to watch it. After all
the remake is directed by Len Wiseman so will probably end up being about vampire werewolves from space that are in love with Kate Beckinsale…although that sounds like a good movie.
