Oldboy (2003) Rated 18
Oldboy is a tale of revenge surrounding, Oh Dae-Su, a man who is released after being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years only to discover that he has no more than 5 days to find out all the who, what, when, where, why’s surrounding his incarceration. A truly powerful film spliced with heavy violence mixed up in a web of conspiracy and romance.
The rumour mill really has been running on this remake as several stars have been touted as the men to pick up where Min-Sik Choi left off in the original. Early talk of heavy weight A-Listers like Will
Smith (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and Nicolas Cage (Fresh Prince Of Con Air) has been replaced by all but concrete rumours that Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex) will reprise the role, with the aid of accomplished director Spike Lee (Hasn’t made a good film since 25th Hour).
Although this remake may not be trudging its way to a cinema near you before 2013 please endeavour to take two hours out of your life for the winner of the Grand Prix 2004 Film Festival. The original Oldboy really will take a hammer and batter the American remake, leaving it as limp and useless as a chewed up squid.
