Speaking about her experience in her memoir ‘The Currency of Love: A Courageous Journey to Finding the Love Within’, Jill Dodd says she met businessman Adnan Kashoggi at a party in Monaco back in 1980. At the time Jill was suffering from an eating disorder. She said:
I realised I’d never met such an intelligent, worldly and amusing man as Adnan, a 44-year-old father of five.
Yes, he had incredible wealth, but he also had a peaceful kind of strength.
Slowly, I was falling for his charms.
Jill said she realised that she was in love with him after he wrote a love message (in blood) on her arm. How… romantic?
He pulled up my sleeve and he wrote ‘I love you’ I was like oh my god that’s blood and I was kind of shocked.
But I thought it was really funny and cute at the same time.
Jill was so besotted with Adnan that she eventually agreed to become one of his 11 ‘pleasure wives’. Apparently this set up is allowed under Saudi Arabian law.
In that moment, I become a member of Adnan’s harem, taking turns with other women to have sex with the man I love.
In a recent interview with 60 Minutes’ Peter Stefanovic, Jill added:
He said, ‘I want to take care of you. I want to make a five-year contract with you’.
He had this whole compound with several suites … several different cottages around it.
I had my own cottage and Adnan’s cottage or Adnan’s house or portion of the compound was private.
So when I saw him, I would be alone with him in his place or he would come see me in my cottage.
Now Jill believes that Adnan was paying huge sums of money to modelling agencies in order to prey upon beautiful young women to come to his parties and have sex with him and his friends:
We did (cocaine) recreationally. We would lock ourselves in a room for days, we would make love, we would eat, the chef would bring us food.
I didn’t think of myself as one of those women but I evidently was.
I mean, I was. I never thought of myself as a hooker though. I still don’t think that.
In the book, Jill revealed that she stayed faithful to Adnan the whole time:
As the months went by, I just wanted to be with Adnan and didn’t care about the details. He was my boyfriend.
Even though there were other women around, I didn’t know who was a fellow pleasure wife, a casual lover or a flirtatious friend. There was no real relationship between us females.
After a while the pressure of not having a monogamous relationship became too much and Jill and Adnan split. Amazingly, she went on to found surf brand Roxy and is now happily married with three kids.
Although Jill speaks quite positively about the experience, it just seems completely messed up that an older business mogul would prey on young models and keep them close for his own personal pleasure. It’s clear that he can’t have cared for these girls in the way they wanted him too – he used his power, money and charm to entice these girls and then after that they were at his disposal. At least in Jill’s case she broke free and managed to go on to live a happy life.
