Wouldn’t it be really weird if 70-year-old Meryl Streep used her Golden Globes acceptance speech to shit all over the MMA world? Well, bizarrely, that’s exactly what happened last night.

During her speech, Streep delivered a pretty powerful message taking a stand against some of Donald Trump’s more controversial policies, but in the process she decided to throw the world of mixed martial arts under the bus as well.
After shouting out Ryan Gosling and Dev Patel (the only 2 foreigners in the room apparently), Streep said:
Who are we, and what is Hollywood anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places. Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.

Bit of a weird stance to take considering there are a TON of foreigners competing in MMA (including 5 current champions). And how can you say mixed martials arts isn’t an art? It literally has the word “art” in it.
Naturally, the reaction hasn’t been too great:
Meryl Streep how ignorant are u. In your speech you stated "Disrespect invites disrespect" yet you ignorantly disrespected an entire sport.

With all due respect to #MerylStreep… MMA may not be the "arts" but then again, neither was "Ricki and the Flash." #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/jEENO3CC0M

Definitions 3&4. Athletes are artists in their own right. Plus they're an incredibly diverse group. Don't be so close minded & judgemental☺️ pic.twitter.com/MLW71HQQ2K

Really weird to see someone talk about not discriminating then basically discriminate against an entire group of skilled, hard working ppl.

So we had Leo using his Oscars win to talk about climate change, while Meryl Streep used her big moment to say MMA isn’t an art because… there’s too many white people in it? Sort it out, Meryl.
