All we seem to hear about these days is prices going up due to the ongoing cost of living crisis and it turns out that even McDonald’s are feeling the pinch at the moment. Never thought I’d see the day.

The fast food giant sent out a statement late last night – presumably hoping nobody would notice – where they outlined plans to increase the price of many of their items by 10p or 20p, including their iconic cheeseburger. They’ve retailed that for 99p over here  for the last 14 years but have been forced to increase the price to £1.19 thanks to inflation and everything else going on at the moment.

Here’s what Alistair Macrow, chief executive officer of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, had to say:

At times like this, we know that providing great value is important. Since we opened in the UK in 1974, we’ve committed to offering great tasting food at affordable prices, and that commitment will not change.

But, today’s pressures mean, like many, we’re having to make some tough choices about our prices.

This summer, our restaurants will be adding between 10p and 20p to a number of the menu items impacted most by inflation.

From today, we’ll be increasing the price of our cheeseburger for the first time in over 14 years, taking it from 99p to £1.19.

Some prices remain unaffected, and some will continue to vary across our restaurants.

We understand that any price increases are not good news, but we have delayed and minimised these changes for as long as we could.

We will continue to listen to what you want from us and work tirelessly to find solutions to today’s cost challenges affecting our business.

Well that’s kind of a bummer isn’t it? It really does signify how out of control inflation is getting in this country as well.

I suppose you have to hand it to McDonald’s for never increasing the price of the cheeseburger over the last 14 years. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

Expect everyone across the board to be doing similar over the next couple of months too which just completely sucks right? Gonna be a long time – if ever – before this gets any better. Probably need to devalue the currency to do that. Great.
