Matthew Perry’s autobiography has been getting a load of press over the last couple of weeks before its release this Tuesday and the ‘Friends’ actor sat down with Diane Sawyer for a far reaching interview about his life and the book over the weekend.

The interview went all over the place but the most shocking part came when Sawyer showed Perry old clips from ‘Friends’ where Chandler Bing’s fluctuated from being visibly super skinny to somewhat bigger. He clearly found it extremely difficult to watch, almost breaking down in tears as he described what was going on with him at that point in his life.
It’s actually pretty distressing footage of the guy to be honest, but I suppose that’s the reason that you watch these ‘tell all’ interviews. There’s a quick clip from it in the first video below, then you can watch the whole thing in the other videos below that:
That’s very hard to watch.
In this weird way I feel sorry for that guy, ’cause that’s a guy that’s out of control’.
I didn’t know what was going on with me. I weighed 155lbs (11st), on my way to 128lbs (9.14st) … I feel too sorry for that guy, he’s going through too much and it’s me.
And I remember that, and I didn’t understand what was going on, but again, I’m sorry, I’m so grateful to not be that any more… but it’s hard to watch that.
Things got deep and dark whilst writing the book, but I was determined to keep going because however deep it went for me, and dark it went for me, that will help somebody who got that dark.
Obviously, because I was on Friends, more people will listen to me. So I’ve got to take advantage of that, and I’ve got to help as many people as I can.
Pretty emotional stuff hey, but that does sound like a worthy goal and that he isn’t really doing it for attention or another payday. His book is certainly getting a lot of publicity and I’m sure it will be on a lot of people’s Christmas lists, so let’s hope it does help and inspire some people out there to get sober and confront their demons.
For more of the same, check out this dumb story about Matthew Perry getting punched in the face by a stoned Cameron Diaz. A lot of fun stories in the book as well it seems.
