There’s plenty of celebrities out there who love talking politics and can’t wait to tell us who to vote for, but one person who isn’t playing that game is Matthew McConaughey, and he made that crystal clear when speaking with The Project host Carrie Bickmore earlier this week.
The 50-year-old seemed to be enjoying the interview and was happily promoting his new book until Carrie asked him, out of nowhere, how he feels about Donald Trump:
Well that’s that then. The host was so sure she was about to get another Trump pile-on from a Hollywood superstar but McConaughey was not interested in the slightest.
Does this mean Matthew McConaughey is a Trump supporter? Well he’s an old school, church-going traditionalist from the South, so it would probably be weird if he wasn’t a Republican. Which doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a fan of Trump’s, but you know what politics are like in America – it’s like rooting for a football team where you support your side no matter what, even if you don’t necessarily back the manager/President himself.

Well whether you wish Matthew McConaughey had dissed Trump or not, you have to admire the fact he refused to become this show’s click bait. There aren’t many things more tiresome than celebrities getting political and trying to score brownie points by shitting on Trump, but when you’re a legend of the game like Matthew McConaughey you don’t need to dance to other people’s tunes. Although pretty sad that he knew he couldn’t say anything even if he wanted to, because it would be twisted and misconstrued to fit whatever narrative The Project was going for. That’s the “news” in 2020 I guess.
McConaughey was also granted his wish for a long-form interview with Joe Rogan last night… and still didn’t talk politics. Fair play to the guy:
