The internet coming after Matt Rife is probably the most predictable cancellation ever. You simply can’t be a good-looking twenty-something who got famous on TikTok and then pivot to being a stand-up comedian who makes jokes about domestic violence and other controversial topics, can you?
In his new Netflix special, Natural Selection, Rife mocks women who are into astrology and crystals, saying: “I am so tired of you ladies blaming your poor decision-making skills on planets that don’t even know you. Get this through your head: Astrology is not this magical life guideline that predetermines your future in the stars. Just because Jupiter has a ring and you don’t doesn’t mean that’s what you’re supposed to look up to for this magical advice.”
This prompted a TikToker named Bunny Hedaya (below) to share a video of her 6-year-old taking a shot at Rife, in which the lad says “Actually, it’s Saturn that has the rings. Also, you’re mean to girls.” Which probably wasn’t a good idea, to be fair.
Matt Rife responded the only way a ‘controversial’ comedian could, by clapping back with a devastating joke that no 6-year-old could ever really comprehend, let alone have a comeback for:
Which is probably one of the only funny things Matt Rife has ever said, to be fair, but not really ideal that he aimed it at a 6-year-old. Then again, as a mum, you can’t put your six-year-old on the internet to take a shot at a comedian and not expect the comedian to respond, right?
What’s annoying about the Matt Rife controversy though is that we have to deal with this with basically every popular comedian. Every comedian will eventually make a controversial joke, and then we have to act like they’re the first one who ever has. The only really ‘offensive’ thing about Matt Rife is that he should be funnier, given how quick his star has risen in recent months. He’s really not that funny a comedian to be making such a big deal about, so if he offends you, your best bet is probably to ignore him until he goes away.
