If there’s one person that we probably didn’t need to hear from today in the midst of the terrifying situation in Ukraine and the possibility of World War III incoming, then it’s former Health minister Matt Hancock, who has decided to release an interview where he tries to justify breaking Covid guidelines because he had fallen in love.

And yes, it really is even more cringeworthy than it sounds, probably aided by the fact that Hancock rocked up in a turtleneck for the interview with Steven Bartlett on his ‘Diary Of A CEO’ podcast and that there were two bottles of Huel on the table whilst the pair were talking. You can watch a clip from the interview below, but be warned it really is enough to make you puke in your mouth a little bit:

I resigned because I broke the social distance in guidelines then. They weren’t actually rules. They weren’t the law. But that’s not the point. The point is they were the guidelines that I’d been proposing.

It actually happened after … the rules were lifted, but the guidance was still in place. So I’m not trying to claim that I hold no bitterness about this because I broke the rules, I fess up, I broke the guidance, and there were only two people responsible for this.

I brought her into the department to help with public communications. And so we spent a lot of time together, ironically, trying to get me to be able to communicate in a more emotionally intelligent way.

And we fell in love. And that’s something that was completely outside of my control. And of course, I regret the pain that that’s caused and the very, very, very public nature. Anybody who’s been through this knows how difficult it is, how painful it is doing that in public is incredibly painful, but I fell in love with someone.

Anybody knows how difficult it is ending a relationship, and we have six children. It’s tough. But Gina and I love each other very deeply.

Lol. I suppose I should thank Hancock for showing up and attempting a redemption arc and failing so spectacularly and making us laugh our asses off when we’re all worried sick about Vladimir Putin potentially setting off nuclear weapons because it serves as a slight distraction, but in truth I’m still massively angry about EVERYTHING he did/didn’t do during the pandemic.

To claim that his social distancing guidelines weren’t actually laws so his actions weren’t illegal is also a bit of a weird flex here. Does he not realise that people couldn’t see their parents one last time before they died because of the ‘guidelines’ he had imposed?

It’s so out out touch that he can even attempt a redemption arc at this point – least of all during the buildup to a nuclear war – but you would at least expect him to own it by now and not cling onto the interpretation of words to try and clear himself of wrongdoing, but I guess it’s at least keeping in character with the guy’s persona. What a wanker.

For more of the same, here’s a super thread of Matt Hancock being weird during the pandemic. Remind yourself.
