Martin Freeman’s name is trending all over social media since the release of the trailer for his new movie. Not because it looks especially good, but rather because someone’s dug up a bunch of quotes he gave in old interviews where he says the sorts of things that can get you cancelled with the quickness in 2023.

How can this be, you ask? Martin Freeman seems like the most unproblematic actor in Hollywood. Well, here are the examples being shared, taken from various interviews spanning 2008 – 2020:

So obviously these are all things that would cause a PR nightmare for any celebrity if you said them in 2023/4, but I’m not sure they’re quite as conclusive as everyone on social media claims. I mean, Martin Freeman is one of the driest, most sarcastic men in the business. He’s known for being very dry with his humour, on-screen and off.

Then again, you could be of the mind that rape jokes are never funny and that smacking kids is never OK, but I’m not sure that necessarily means he’s a ‘rape apologist’ who should be sent to prison for smacking his kids when they were little. It’s probably a good thing for Martin Freeman that he’s already ridiculously rich and famous though, because if he was an up-and-coming actor coming out with this stuff today, it would be one way ticket to Cancel City for sure.
