Romelu Lukaku’s transfer to Manchester United was one of the biggest of the summer and he’s certainly lived up to expectations, scoring five goals this season which makes him the joint leading scorer in the Premier League alongside Sergio Aguero.

Manchester United have clearly found a new hero in the form of Lukaku and it seems as though they’ll be singing songs about him for a long time as he leads them to a whole bunch of titles. Unfortunately, one of their new chants about him has been deemed to be racist, leading to the intervention of anti-racist charity Kick It Out.

The song isn’t negative about Lukaku, but it states that he has a huge penis which is reinforcing racial stereotypes about black men. You can hear it below, as well as read Kick It Out’s statement:

Kick It Out is aware of footage of alleged racist chanting by supporters of Manchester United that emerged on Wednesday evening [September 13].

The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory. Racist stereotypes are never acceptable in football or wider society, irrespective of any intention to show support for a player.

We have contacted Manchester United regarding the issue and will be working closely with them and the FA to ensure that it is addressed swiftly. If we receive any reports relating to the discriminatory chant, those will be passed on to the governing body and the perpetrators can expect to face punishment.

Not sure what to make about that one. I suppose it is racist but not in a negative way for Lukaku, but I guess if you’re going to be fair you should clamp down on both sides of the problem and not reinforce stereotypes. Manchester United aren’t sure what to do about it either, and are currently seeking ‘advice’ on the matter while liaising with Kick It Out to sort the whole mess out.
