The New Orleans Police Department is urging people not to take matters into their own hands after a video was shared showing a man who rigged his truck with a flash bang in order to deter burglars. Gotta be honest; after seeing how effective it was – I’m not sure the fine people of New Orleans will be taking that advice:

Sadly, rigging your vehicle with a flash bang to deter car thieves is illegal for the same reason you can’t rig a Home Alone-style trap to your front door to injure or kill an intruder. Then again, you’d have to prove the car owner rigged the vehicle and that it wasn’t just in the car and the thief set it off by accident.
In any case, if the flash bang caused the burglar injury, they could sue. Here are the general effects of being flash-banged:
Not very pleasant. Can’t say I blame car owners for taking matters into their own hands seeing as the police/justice system clearly aren’t doing a good enough job arresting/deterring these criminals. Not that we’re encouraging vigilantism or anything, but you can’t say it isn’t satisfying to see the results.
