Well, I suppose he did the right thing. I’m not sure what the legal situation is anytime McDonald’s accidentally hands you a bag of cash through the drive-thru window, but they probably could’ve found the exact moment it happened through CCTV and then used his card information/number plate to track him down. Who knows, maybe he could have kept the cash and got away with it? So fair play to him for taking it back and ensuring no one got fired over it, plus banking $200 for his good deed. Although no free food the next time he visited, according to a follow-up video:
“They put my name down and my number, and I had to pay for my two McChickens and a Sprite, which is fine. I’m not too worried about it.”
That’s a shame. The biggest question though is how exactly does McDonald’s allow this to happen in the first place? I know they’re handing out thousands of Maccy D bags every day, but you have to be a little cautious about the one containing thousands of dollars in cash. You know, try not to get it mixed up with Sausage McMuffin bag or have it anywhere near the drive-thru window in the first place. I’m guessing the reason they put the cash in a McDonald’s bag is so that it doesn’t look like a bag of cash when they take it to the bank later, but there’s also a suspicious, cynical part of me that thinks maybe this Maccies branch is doing some undercover drug dealing, or money laundering as this chap himself jokes. Which probably makes it even more crucial that he ended up returning the money. Never mind saving a job, this lad may have actually saved a life. Fair play.
