Incredible story out of Algeria this week as a man who went missing almost 30 years ago at the age of 17 has been found alive in his neighbour’s house in a hole in the ground underneath stacks of hay.

Omar Bin Omran’s family assumed he had been killed during the Algerian civil war that raged for 10 years. The truth was he had been kidnapped and held in a hole in the ground at his neighbour’s house the whole time – less than 200 metres away from his own family home.

A 61-year-old is now in police custody after Omar, now 45, was rescued on May 12. It is now the longest known kidnapping in world history (the second closest is a girl in California who was held captive for 18 years).

The case of Omar's discovery, almost three decades on from his alleged kidnapping, could mean he is one of the world's longest-held captives

Just imagine being kidnapped in 1998 and staying in a dark hole until 2024. That is literally a fate worse than life in prison for a crime you didn’t commit. Kidnapped, and thrown in a hole in someone’s sheep pen for 27 years! How do you even survive that? At least in jail you can socialise and interact with other inmates, walk around, communicate with your friends and family now and again. Omar had nothing to do but sit in a hole for 27 years while everyone thought he was dead.

The worst part? The Algerian media says Omar was unable to call for help because he had a magic spell cast on him. Sitting in a grimy hole with an Algerian curse on you? Literally cannot think of anything worse.

Another awful detail to this story is that the neighbour/kidnapper poisoned and killed Omar’s family dog because it had started to pick up the scent of its owner coming from his home and would hang around outside at all hours of the day.

The only reason Omar was discovered was because the kidnapper’s own brother grassed him up to the police. Not because the brother of the kidnapper suddenly developed a conscience or realised it was “the right thing to do”, but rather, because he and the kidnapper had just fallen out over an inheritance dispute. Congratulations to their parents – sounds like they raised a couple of real winners there.

After the kidnapper’s brother phoned the police, the house was searched, and Omar was found. While the house was being searched, the kidnapper attempted to flee the scene, but was caught and arrested. Officials have promised the ‘perpetrator of this heinous crime’ will be tried with ‘severity’, although I can’t think of anything close to justice that doesn’t involve Omar being allowed to kidnap his kidnapper, and keep him in a hole of his own for the rest of time. Are we sure the Algerian justice system can’t make that happen?

In any case, nothing will be able to undo the trauma and unimaginable cruelty that Omar endured over the last 27 years, not to mention the impossible task of catching up with everything he’s missed out on in that time. Being dumped in a hole in 1998 and released in 2024 is basically the slowest time travel possible. Omar probably has no idea what internet is, and is now re-entering a world with self-driving electric cars. How long will it take for him to get brought up to speed on 27 years of history and innovation? Where do you even start?

Imagine him seeing his friends and family for the first time since he was teenager, as a now-45-year-old man? The saddest part is Omar’s mum died in 2013, meaning she never got to find out the truth about what happened to her son.

Just an unbelievably f*cked up and heartbreaking story. Here’s hoping Omar is given the love and support he needs and is somehow able to recover from the ordeal and enjoy the rest of his life.
