If you found a cheque for £4 million lying around on the floor, there’s probably no way that you could just pick it up and go to the bank and cash it, but I think you would want some kind of compensation for returning it to whoever it belonged to in the first place. Maybe a cool ten grand or something you know?

Unfortunately for 38 year old Anouar G from Frankfurt though, this wasn’t the case at all. He spotted a cheque made out for to everyone’s favourite sweet manufacturer Haribo from supermarket group Rewe.   €4,631,538.80 on the train platform after he was visiting his mum.

Anouar contacted Haribo directly and they didn’t even ask for the cheque to be returned, just asking him to destroy it instead. He then received a box with six bags of sweets in as a reward a few days later.

Here’s what he had to say about his experience:

There was such a large sum on it that I couldn’t even pronounce it.

I wasn’t impressed with the sweets they sent me as I saved them millions.

I thought that was a bit cheap.

I suppose the guy has a point, but unsurprisingly Haribo released a statement saying that nobody could have cashed the cheque other than their company because it had their name on so it wasn’t really that big a deal, other than being a bit embarrassing that someone misplaced the cheque. Their gift package was a standard one that they sent out, so again I don’t think that we can be that angry about it either.

Maybe in this context it might have been a better idea to pre-empt how it might have looked and sending out something other than the standard stuff, like a year’s supply of free Haribo or something? It’s the little things.

People are calling them tightasses now and I’m not sure if they really deserve it, but I doubt it’s going to affect their bottom line in the long run. Just a dumb story for people to remember every now and again.
