I’ve eaten a lot of eggs but in my life I don’t think I’ve ever seen a double yolk – the odds are 1000 to one – so imagine how stoked this dude must have been when he cracked open 12 in a row. Apparently the odds are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, which I’m not even sure how to pronounce. A squillion or something?

Anyway, 40 year old John Landy (pictured below) bought a box of a dozen eggs from their local Morrisons in Wigan, as you do. His wife had already cracked two of them – which weren’t double yolkers – so John was pretty surprised when he cracked the next one and a double yolk popped out:
When I got one double yolk, I was quite surprised because I had never seen one before.
I opened another one and that was one. We were having four eggs and they were all double yolkers. I sent my wife a picture.
I decided to open the rest of the eggs, and they were all double yolks. I was really surprised. I couldn’t believe it.
My mum had a double yolk once, but I had never seen one. To keep opening them… I was gobsmacked.
We didn’t eat them straight away and took photographs of them, as nobody would have believed us otherwise.
We did eventually poach a few to have with beans and toast, but they didn’t taste any different.
I broke all the eggs in a bowl and we ended up having eggs that day and eggs the next day, and throwing four away, simply because we had too many eggs!
Too many eggs huh? What a crazy life this John guy leaves – sounds absolutely wild up there in Wigan.
As getting double yolkers are supposed to give you good luck, John followed up this incredible feat by deciding to buy a lottery ticket. It didn’t come through for him, but in another happy culinary twist, John bought a six pack of bacon that ended up having seven rashers in. Hopefully he didn’t end up throwing it away and got to enjoy that slice of luck this time.
