I never really considered myself much of a Paraguayan swimming fan, but that was before I’d heard of Luana Alonso…
Luana Alonso was ready to take the podium for Paraguay in the women’s butterfly race at the Olympics this year, but unfortunately, she didn’t even make it past the heat stage in Paris.

Despite the shock announcement of her retirement, Luana Alonso decided to stick around in the Olympic village and make a little holiday out of it. Sadly, she’s now been sent home for creating an ‘inappropriate atmosphere’ within her camp, partly because she… snuck off to Disneyland?
As explained by the NY Post:
“Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,” Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, said in a statement published by the outlet.
“We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village.”
Alonso had reportedly been staying in the Olympic Village despite announcing her retirement from the sport.
Paraguayan media outlets reported that Alonso had spent time in Disneyland instead of supporting her teammates, upsetting the country’s Olympic leadership.
Well, I’m sure we all had higher expectations of what the Paraguayan Olympic Committee considered ‘inappropriate’, but apparently that’s the main reason Luana Alonso got booted out of the village; because she want to Disneyland.
Since when is that a crime? After all, Luana Alonso is retired from the game, and so it’s only natural she’d want to go to Disneyland to cheer herself up a bit. Makes you wonder whether there’s more to the story they are not telling us, because this doesn’t really sound like the sort of offence that would get you sent home early, especially days after you’ve announced your retirement to the world. She’s in Paris ffs! Let the girl go sightseeing!
Anyway, the good news is that Luana has since flown to America where there are multiple Disney theme parks she can check out. Happy early retirement, Luana!
