Fourcross: The Need For Speed (But Not That Kind)
If you’re a speed-freak teetering on the edge of mental instability, this sport is probably for you. Fourcross encourages social inclusion, as it brings (crazy) able-bodied people and (crazy) disabled people together in competition. A Fourcross bike is a modified four-wheeled mountain bike with independent suspension and the controls are similar to regular mountain bikes.
This sport is basically for fearless nut-cases with finely-honed reflexes, whether disabled or not. Speeds of up to 30mph are reached as participants hurtle around many of the country’s lift-assisted bike parks. The Fourcross riding style is a combination of mountain biking, rally driving and supercross. Wheelchair users give able-bodied mountain-bikers a run for their money when competing at the bike parks, as the Fourcross bikes corner like demons at high speed.
The price of a Fourcross bike can be prohibitive, at around £7000 for a modified machine, but clubs around the country offer taster sessions if you feel like pushing yourself to the limit, if only for a day. We don’t recommend stealing one: if only for the reason they’re a real bugger to hide.
