‘Line Of Duty’ is somehow the most watched television show in the history of the UK – it’s fine sure, but I don’t think it’s really deserving of that accolade – and it’s well documented how fans were unsatisfied with the potential series finale of series six, after the elusive H was revealed to be DCI Buckells.

There was always a feeling that the end of season six probably wasn’t going to be the last ever episode due to the low key way that it went out, but showrunner Jed Mercurio would neither confirm or deny his plans for a future series. A TV insider has now revealed that Vicky McClure, Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar have all signed up for a three episode run to finish things off that could be broadcast as soon as next Christmas.

Here’s what he had to say:

There was a very strong feeling, particularly among fans, that there was unfinished business with Line of Duty.

Viewers weren’t satisfied with the ending of series six and were crying out for a more sensational conclusion — now Jed can deliver that.

The question is whether the person we were led to believe was H really is the villain that AC-12 has been hunting or if it was another nemesis.

There’s also a theory another, darker puppet master is at work.

The fact that they’re looking at taking the unusual step of making three episodes rather than the usual six or seven is a reflection of just how special this is for the show.

Does making three episodes rather than a whole regular season actually mean that it’s special? Or just that they can’t afford to pay everyone their regular rates because their contracts have increased so much because they’ve been doing it for so long? Just asking the question.

Either way, I’m sure fans of the show – apparently the majority of people in the country – will be stoked to hear that the show is coming back and might receive a more satisfactory ending than the one that was originally served up. I guess I’m sort of  looking forward to it as well. This time next year people! Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey!

For more of the same, check out Jed Mercurio shouting at a journalist for asking him about ‘Line Of Duty’. Come on man.
