We’ve already talked about a spider being found in a KFC wrap today and how rank that is, but imagine rocking up to McDonald’s and finding a mouse poo in your cheeseburger.

Again, that’s not an ideal situation but one that Lisa Honeycomb found herself in back in October 2021 after visiting the drive thru McDonald’s in Leytonstone, London. She immediately complained to Waltham Forest council and upon further investigation of the venue, the council found that there was an infestation of mice in the prep area that included a load more poop and the rotting corpse of one of them stuck on the head of a mop. Completely rank.
The restaurant was immediately closed down for ten days to increase hygiene standards to an acceptable level, but now Thameside Magistrates Court have decided to fine the restaurant chain a whopping £475,000 as well after they plead guilty to breaching hygiene laws. Here’s what District Judge Susan Holdham said:
McDonald’s is a very reputable company. When customers go to McDonald’s, they expect and have the right to expect the highest standards in food hygiene.
This is not some backstreet burger or kebab bar – children go to McDonald’s as a treat.
The premises was dirty, this was built-up grease and dirt caused by non-existent or ineffective cleaning over long periods of time.
That’s so gross isn’t it? I bet the franchise owner – each McDonald’s is a franchise owned by someone who buys into the larger chain but essentially has autonomy over their own store – was 100% fired from the company after allowing standards to fall so badly and letting the good McDonald’s name be so badly tarnished. They would have deserved it as well. How can you let something like that happen to your restaurant?
I guess it’s also important to note that whilst the food is genuinely rank at McDonald’s, the hygiene standards are pretty decent usually so this is an outlier down to bad management and you shouldn’t stop going to your local McDonald’s because of it. Maybe you should stop going to your local McDonald’s for other reasons though. Just saying.
For more of the same, check out when this guy released a bunch of rats into McDonald’s because they screwed up his order. Similar energy.
