Five years following his death in 2018, Eastenders legend Leslie Grantham AKA Den Watts has been #MeToo’d by The Fast Show’s Arabella Weir, who alleges that he targeted her in her trailer when they were filming ’99-1′, a police crime drama, in 1995.
Arabella, who now plays Yvette in Coronation Street, told The Sun that the Dirty Den actor entered her dressing room without knocking and started hitting on her inappropriately:
‘He suddenly appeared in my trailer door. He didn’t knock, he just walked in and said something about fancying me. It was pretty graphic, and I thought, “Oh f**k”. I remember thinking he’d gone beyond what anyone could excuse as funny flirty banter and that I might be in trouble. It was frightening.
I didn’t feel I could joke my way out of it. I thought I was in Harvey Weinstein danger.’
Fortunately, she says, a colleague turned up to save the day:
‘Luckily somebody quickly knocked on the door and said, “Oh Arabella, you’re needed”. I’m eternally grateful to that guy and looking back he did it on purpose. I think they had eyes on Leslie all the time to make sure that things were avoided.’
The comedian also called Leslie a ‘proper predator’, alleging that he also made many ‘sexual advances’ to other women working on the show. Which I guess we’re just going to have to take her word for because it’s not like he’s around to dispute the claims.
Although let’s be real here – it’s not exactly difficult to believe, is it? This is a guy who spent 10 years in prison for murdering a taxi driver in Germany, and was also involved in an online sex scandal in 2004 when an undercover reporter tricked him into jerking off on his webcam. Never forget:
So yeah, not sure these latest allegations will alter his reputation too much, but at least it reaffirms there was nobody better out there to play Dirty Den. Trust the BBC to get that one right.
