Lana Del Rey confirmed this morning that she’ll be releasing her highly-anticipated new album in September, and in the process took the opportunity to take some shots at Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, and other female artists she feels have gotten away with musical content that critics would give her grief over.

Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating, etc – can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money – or whatever i want – without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorising abuse???????

This has kicked up a bit of a shit storm online, with a bunch of people accusing Lana of being anti-feminist (and racist, for some reason) by shitting on a whole bunch of her female peers. Here’s the sort of reaction she’s getting:

There’s a lot of people sticking up for her as well, pointing out that she’s not necessarily shitting on these women, rather she’s saying that all women should be able to express themselves honestly in music without getting slandered for it, as she has been plenty of times in the past because a lot of her songs deal with the ‘ugly truth’ of relationships.
Of course it’s also a pretty genius way of kicking off the hype train for her new album. Sounds like she’s really fired up for it and ready to take on all the other ladies she mentioned in the charts. No doubt they’ll have something to say about her comments before then though.
