Meet Kseniya Simonova or “The Lady of the Sand” as she is colloquially known, in Ukraine. Kseniya was the winner of Ukraine’s got Talent when she demonstrated her incredible skill of being able to produce art with just her hands, a light table and some sand. The result is truly mesmerising. And she’s kind of hot, in a weird Transylvanian, S & M fantasy kind of way.
Having an artist for a mother and a soldier for a father explains perhaps why her stories are so politically driven and why she inherited such an astounding ability to create such intricate beautiful pieces of art. They initially discouraged her from being an artist given how difficult, unconventional and fruitless a career path it can so often be. However her husband drove her on, selling all of his expensive computer equipment to be able to afford the volcanic sand that is required to create such vivid performances.

Winning “Ukraine’s Got Talent” earned her a juicy 100,000 euros and has seen her perform all over the world even for royal families. This video is taken from an earlier round of the show but easily my favourite piece by far. Reducing many members of the audience to tears given its historical significance and emotional resonance, it really is a wonderfully powerful and touching display.
