A Labour council leader has been suspended by the party following allegations he sent sexually explicit messages to Ukrainian refugees in the city.
Edinburgh city council leader Cammy Day faces allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” after sending social media messages to refugees complimenting them on their looks, asking about their sexual preferences, and attempting to meet them for dates.
One refugee, who arrived in Edinburgh in 2022, said she was bombarded with messages from the Labour council leader. The Sunday Mail, which says it has seen the messages, said Day asked the woman sexually explicit questions, sent love heart emojis, and asked if she wanted to “meet up for wine”.
The refugee says she ignored most of the messages, but Day then found her on a dating app, where the messages became more sexually explicit. She explains:
“When Cammy Day first wrote to me from several social medias, I was surprised that a person of such a high position was interested in me, and then I saw him a couple of times at pro-Ukrainian events.
“He found and subscribed to me on social media and started liking my stories intensively, sending kissing emojis, especially when I posted gym and pool photos.“One day he found me on a dating website and messaged me which was very strange to me as he was already following my social media and knew that I knew who he was.”
Indeed, 50-year-old Cammy Day has been a vocal supporter of the Ukrainian refugees who have made their home in Edinburgh since the Russian invasion of their homeland.
The refugee said she tried to be “polite” and to stay away from sexual topics, but was “afraid to say no or say something wrong” and felt “under pressure” when Day sent messages through the dating app.
“I tried to ignore all his hints about sex or meeting up because I was afraid of his influence and just tried to be polite to avoid any conflict.“A few of my friends also faced a similar situation where he wrote to them on social media and in the dating app. One of my Ukrainian friends said that this person had shown sexual interest for some time but I don’t know what actually happened or why he was interested specifically in Ukrainians.”
“There was an element of a power dynamic there. The person couldn’t raise it as an issue because of their own status and a fear of retribution. You’re talking about the most vulnerable people, refugees. I was told to go to the police so I did but they weren’t able to do anything about it as they didn’t see it as criminal.”
Wow, politics doesn’t half attract some sleazy perverts eh? Although there does seem to be some debate over whether this Labour council leader did anything wrong. Sure, it’s not very dignified behaviour to look someone up on social media, chat them up, get nowhere, and then find them on a dating app and try again. Especially when you’re a council member trying to specifically date Ukrainian refugees. It may not be a crime, but it’s definitely not a good look.
Time will now tell whether Day loses his position or resigns before that can happen. Pretty mental that he didn’t see this sh1t-storm coming to be honest.
