Before the anti-semitic statements made by Ye (previously known as Kanye West), there was already much concern expressed over his mental state. He was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder in 2016, after suffering a psychiatric emergency during his Saint Pablo Tour. He famously opened up about this diagnosis when interviewing with David Letterman, claiming he experienced extreme paranoia.
Divorce History
Kim Kardashian and Ye were married from 2014 to 2022. They had 4 children together, 2 via surrogate. Their kids range from ages 3 to 9. In February of 2021, Kim K filed for divorce claiming “irreconcilable differences,” later admitting they had little in common and she was lonely.
Kim K was able to officially and legally change her marital status to single in March of 2022, with the hope that it would help make the divorce more of a reality for Kanye. This did not finalize the divorce. In fact, the court is not set to meet until mid-December to officially finalize the divorce.
In March of 2022, it was revealed that Kim was looking into a conservatorship for Ye, supposedly due to her worry over his mental state and his seeming inability to take his medication. She noted his erratic behavior and social media blasts directing anger towards her as a mother and her then relationship with Pete Davidson.
Kim K and her mom Kris Jenner were rumored to be looking into getting a conservatorship for Kanye. They were allegedly working with Lou Taylor, the former business manager to Brittney Spears that helped Jamie Spears get a conservatorship.
What Is A Conservatorship?
A conservatorship, also known as a guardianship, is typically used for individuals who do not have the ability to care for themselves. Much like why individuals hire property management firms, they sometimes don’t have the proper connections, resources, or time to adequately care for their rental.
Likewise, individuals placed under a conservatorship don’t always have the ability to utilize all of their resources or faculties. Oftentimes this happens with elderly individuals, as their mental and physical capacity deteriorates. This usually happens if individuals are unable to properly care for their finances, making it necessary for someone to step in to make sure financial obligations and needs are being met.
There have been cases of this guardianship being abused, even among the elderly population. There was even a movie that Netflix made titled, “I Care A Lot”, which came out in 2020 and starred Rosamund Pike. It was about a legal guardian who preyed on individuals by essentially seizing control of their finances and assets, misusing and abusing the purpose of conservatorship. In some cases elderly people would be put into a retirement home, heavily medicated, and the guardian would seize control of their home, often selling it and controlling the profits.
Other Celebrities In Conservatorships
The most famous conservatorship is that of Britney Spears. The idea of a conservatorship was not well known until Britney famously fought back, which led to the end of her conservatorship after 13 years in November 2021.
Another famous celebrity who tried to end her conservatorship after seeing the support of the “Free Britney” movement was Amanda Bynes. She has been under a conservatorship since 2014. Amanda’s mother is her guardian, and she won’t even allow Amanda to marry her long-time fiance.
Other celebrities where conservatorships were threatened or attempted include Wendy Williams, Lindsay Lohan, Aaron Carter, Mariah Carey, Demi Lovato, and Charlie Sheen.
Conclusion
Many of the celebrities that have been at risk of being placed in a conservatorship tend to suffer from extreme drug and alcohol addiction, and oftentimes mental disorders. Similar to Ye, Amanda Bynes also suffers from bipolar disorder. In the wake of the “Free Britney” movement, and by coming forward with the allegations of a potential conservatorship for Ye, it will be interesting to see whether Ye’s soon-to-be ex-wife will be successful if she decides to pursue a conservatorship further. The recent problems with Ye will most certainly not be to his benefit.
