If you’re a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, then I’m afraid North Korea may not be for you. That’s because according to MSN, Kim Jong-un has issued an outright ban on Spurs matches because the team’s skipper Son Heung-min is South Korean.
This means Wolves and Brentford games are also banned, because Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves) and Kim Ji-soo (Brentford) are also South Korean.
Hilariously, Premier League games in North Korea are shown on a 4-month delay, aired before the 5pm news daily, which means the 24/25 season has basically just started for them, and Premier League champions are crowned after a new season kicks off.
Matches are also shortened from 90mins to 60mins and are almost certainly in breach of copyright, according to a report by the Washington-based Stimson Center’s 38 North project.
It said North Korean television schedules are rife with propaganda, but sports is “one of the few moments each day when state TV is not trying to send an overt or underlying message to its viewers”.
And yet, it kind of does, because South Korean footballers in the Premier League get no airtime in North Korea. Which may actually be one of the first benevolent things Kim Jong-un has done in his tyrannical reign thus far. Banning North Korean Spurs fans from watching their team’s dumpster fire of a season? Doing them a big favour if you think about it.
For the time Kim Jong-un forced everyone with the same name as his daughter to change their name, click HERE. The guy is an absolute menace.
