Kenny Dalglish – Does He Still Deserve To Be In A Job?

Dismal League Record

It’s all well and good saying that Liverpool have been underperforming this season but where’s the proof? Let’s start with the positives. Liverpool have won the Carling Cup, beating the likes of Stoke, Chelsea and Man City on the way. Despite how difficult Cardiff made it for them in the final, you can’t argue that they didn’t deserve to win the cup. They’ve also fought their way to the FA cup semi finals dispatching Man United and Stoke on the way. (OK Liverpool fans? I acknowledged it).

However, a manager does not spend £100m+ to be a cup team. After spending that amount of money I’d expect a respectable league campaign. That’s why Man City are a joke, they’ve spent countless millions and only delivered one FA cup. That to me is spitting in the face of the fans.

Liverpool are seventh in the table and have played 30; won 11, drawn 9, lost 10. Show me a Liverpool fan who is happy with that and I’ll show you a lying bastard. There was so much optimism around the place at the start of the season but Dalglish’s unique brand of management hasn’t reaped many rewards. I hear countless times that Liverpool have played their opponents off the park but not gotten what they deserved. That’s not a valid excuse, as a fan you can’t be happy with that. A club the size of Liverpool, you expect a win near enough every game! It’s about time they did what United do; right now they play ok at best but they keep picking up victories.

In a recent interview Dalglish was speaking about there being many ways to record a club’s success. My personal favourite quote being, ‘What other areas are there to improve on — apart from points?” Erm as the football cliché goes, football is a points business so as manager, I’d probably get around to addressing that one as priority numero uno!

Their record in the league has been incredibly disappointing and I can say with every confidence that any other manager would have been sacked long ago. In fact, this was demonstrated last season with the termination of Roy Hodgson’s – who is arguably a man more in touch with modern football than Dalglish – Anfield career. There is no doubt in my mind the Liverpool players (again calm down, I know every team does it) were playing bad to get him out of a job because they knew Kenny was there to step in once he was gone. Fast forward a year and the man is still in a job on sentiment alone with a record not too dissimilar to Hodgson’s. He just isn’t going to bring the same level of success to the club that he brought all those years ago. A big reason for that is his lack of understanding in the transfer market.
