Everyone knows that anytime you combine Leo DiCaprio with Martin Scorsese you end up with an absolute banger of a film. Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, Shutter Island, Gangs of New York – all great films.
Well they’re about to do it again with an adaptation of ‘Devil in the White City’ – a true story which became a bestselling book focused around architect Daniel H. Burnham and serial killer H.H. Holmes, who crafted a ‘Murder Castle’ where he would lure women to their deaths.
Better still, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Keanu Reeves has now also joined the project, and will be playing the lead role as Daniel H. Burnham, with Leo already rumoured to be taking the H.H. Holmes role.
Without spoiling anything, here’s a very basic outline of the book:
It tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham (Reeves), a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the Fair’s shadow.
The story of this classic book being brought to the big screen has been long and complicated to say the least. Leo DiCaprio acquired the rights in 2010 with plans to adapt it into a film where he would play serial killer Holmes. Scorsese joined up in 2015 with Billy Ray to write the script. It had already been put into development by Tom Cruise but the option lapsed in 2004, with Paramount then acquiring the film rights in 2007. Hulu then announced they were developing it as a series in 2019. Is this thing ever going to get made or what?
By all accounts, this time it’s legit and we couldn’t be more excited. Leo DiCaprio and Keanu Reeves in the same movie together? Directed by Martin Scorsese? Leo as a serial killer and Keanu as an, um, architect? Sign me the F up. It probably won’t be out for at least another year but I’ve got a feeling it’ll be worth the wait.
