Justin Bieber dropped a new song this week, and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea it’s probably going to be playing all over the place before long.

Not going to lie, it’s actually a bit of a jam although if you hate Justin Bieber then you probably won’t bring yourself to admit it:
Sorry, just had to listen to that on repeat a few times. Whether you appreciate that’s a fire jam is besides the point though, because all anyone’s talking about is whether ‘What Do You Mean’ promotes rape culture, especially its chorus where Bieber sings:
What do you mean? / When you nod your head yes / But you wanna say no / What do you mean?
The person who started the dialogue was actress Lena Dunham:
Let's do away with pop songs where a girl nods yes when she means no and vice versa, k?
— Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) August 31, 2015
So is this just a minor thing for uber-feminists to complain about or does Dunham actually have a point here? I’m sure there’s plenty of lyrics out there that can be seen as “rapey” if you look at them that way hard enough. It just sounds like he’s singing about a girl who’s indecisive and keeps changing her mind, not necessarily about something sexual. But Lena Dunham hears “when you nod your head yes, but you wanna say no” and all she thinks about is rape. It’s really just a totally harmless song.
Maybe that’s not surprising from the woman who sexually abused her sister when she was 7 then wrote about it in her autobiography.
