Given that Liverpool fans are known to boo the English national anthem when it gets played at cup finals in Wembley, it was something of a surprise to see Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson pay tribute to the Queen and sign her book of condolences on social media the other day.

Liverpool women’s captain Niamh Fahey also signed the book, which was even more of a shock, given she’s Irish and Scouse. Unsurprisingly, the reaction on Twitter was not great…

How to make half your fans hate you immediately:

You’re in the wrong city. Liverpool is not exactly well known for being sympathetic to the royal family. I am sure you will have heard them boooing the national anthem.

Classy stuff. There was one comment that was pretty amusing though…
The official Liverpool twitter account also shared condolences to the Queen, but they were smart enough to turn off comments to ensure it didn’t turn into the sort of sh*t show that’s occurring on Hendo’s page at the moment. Certainly doesn’t bode well for the Champion’s League game at Anfield tonight, in which the players will observe a minute’s silence for the Queen before kick-off. Jurgen Klopp has already urged supporters to ‘respect’ the procedure tonight, but somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.
Anyway, should set the tone early if Liverpool then go on to lose the game against Ajax tonight. Sounds like much-watch TV, all things considered.
