It turns out Joey Barton’s critics have got him all wrong. He’s not having a go at female pundits like Eni Aluko because he’s sexist or bitter or anything like that, but rather, because he cares about women’s mental health and wants to protect them from trolls and abusive men on the internet.
Watch Joey explain this himself on the aptly-named ‘Common Sense With Joey Barton’ podcast:

Do you follow the wise and great Joey Barton’s logic? You can’t blame the lads for abusing and harassing female pundits, so the only solution is to stop female pundits from commenting on the men’s game in the first place. Women are simply incapable of understanding and analysing men’s football at a satisfactory level, on account of not being men themselves, you see. Joey’s just trying to look out for them!
Never mind that the abuse these ladies receive on social media has only increased since Joey Barton started his campaign against them. That’s just a necessary step toward the bigger picture: women like Eni Aluko not being able to comment on the men’s game and being all the safer for it. Joey Barton – protector of women in football. It’s all so clear now.
