Last month, Joe Rogan had “prison reform activist” Sheldon Johnson on his podcast to discuss the unfairness of the US justice system. Johnson had just been released after serving a 25 year jail sentence for robbing someone at gunpoint and pistol-whipping them.

So he went on JRE to talk about how he was reformed and how unfair it was that he was sent to prison for as long as he was, and Joe Rogan agreed that Johnson’s story reflects a huge problem of racism in the justice system.

Well, this week, Sheldon Johnson was arrested after police found a severed head and limbless torso in his apartment. The victim’s neighbours reported hearing “Please don’t. I have a family!” before hearing two gunshots. Here he is carrying the man’s head in a freezer after murdering and dismembering him, and bringing his body into his own apartment:

The police found the victim’s decapitated head in Johnson’s freezer and the limbless torso in a blue bin in his apartment in the Bronx after obtaining a search warrant.

When Sheldon Johnson appeared on Rogan’s podcast on February 1, he spoke about how he changed his life from crime to advocacy, saying:

“It was at that moment that I really said – I have to change my life – I have to change my life – I just can’t do this.

I had a wife, I had kids, I had family still, my son was growing up – he was hearing stories of my so-called notoriety – I just didn’t want to be that dad.”

Prison does two things to you: It brings out the best or it brings out the worst.”

Welp, that aged badly. It turns out the victim, 44-year-old Collin Smal, had spent time in prison alongside Sheldon Johnson. Police reckon a conflict may have arisen between the two stemming from the time they spent together behind bars.

Not a great look for Joe Rogan who is already accused now and again of finding the worst people to prop up and give a platform to. Most of the time this is totally subjective, but on this occassion I think we can all agree he definitely picked the wrong person to talk to about prison reform…

Obviously, rehabilitative justice has its merits, but clearly there are also psychopaths out there who are beyond help. Somehow I don’t think we’ll be seeing Sheldon Johnson on any more podcasts as he spends the rest of his days in prison. Those 25 years don’t seem so bad now, do they?
